US History - From the Vietnam War to the Gulf War

This course traces the key events following the Vietnam War that led to a period of economic uncertainty, an unstable political environment, a global energy crisis, high inflation, and a state of domestic crisis leading to the election of Reagan in the 1980s. Students will learn that following a painful period of protests and crises in the 1960s and 70s, America emerged as the sole superpower by 1990. Emphasis is placed on the Reagan-era, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and how the US influenced the world and maintained its position of power. 

This course runs from Easter to mid-June. Classes meets weekly for 1 hr online. There are additional readings and assignments required outside of class.

English Literature - Shakespeare

Students will learn how to read and understand Shakespearean English, as well as to enjoy the richness of wonderfully written English prose. Focused on one of the following: A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, or The Taming of the Shrew. This course introduces students to identify, analyze and assess literary works. 

This course runs from Easter to mid-June. Classes meets weekly for 1 hr online. There are additional readings and assignments required outside of class. 

American Literature - 19th & 20th Century

Lively and stimulating, this course focuses on a novel study approach of 2-3 American classics dealing with modern, relevant themes. Books are chosen from Where the Red Fern Grows, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, To Kill A Mockingbird, 12 Years a Slave, The Invisible Man, Death of a Salesman, Grapes of Wrath, Animal Farm, among others. 

This course runs from Easter to mid-June. Classes meets weekly for 1 hr online. There are additional readings and assignments required outside of class.

Creative Writing

Lively and fun, this course equips students to develop their creative writing skills focused on fiction. With clear and easy to understand directions and tips, students can improve their narrative storytelling skills in ways that are fun and imaginative. Improves students' overall writing.

This course runs from Easter to mid-June. Classes meets weekly for 1 hr online. There are additional readings and assignments required outside of class.

OTHER COURSES


Canadian Government

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the Canadian government, with an emphasis on Federalism, the role of the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary branches of government, as well as elections and political parties. Students will gain a good understanding of how Canada is governed and their role as a citizen.

Weekly readings and class slides will be provided to complement stimulating class discussions. No textbook purchase.

Greek Mythology

Using the Greek mythology book by the Stephanides Brothers,  this course explores several Greek heroes and legends through literature and folklore, including Theseus, who slew the Minotaur and saved Athens, and Perseus, who slew Medusa the Gorgon. In this fun course, students read the stories, discuss the characters, ideas, themes, cultural nuances of ancient Greece.

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

Canadian History Pre-Confederation

This course provides a rich, comprehensive overview of the major peoples, nations, challenges, and conflicts that shaped Canada's history from the time of the first French settlement in Quebec City to the founding of Canada.

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

Canadian History Post-Confederation

This course tells the story of a young Canadian country and how it (a) establishes itself between the influences of Great Britain and the newly formed USA, (b) deals with continental and global challenges, (c) how it emerges as a global player in its own right following WWII, and (d) the changes Canada has undergone since the 1970's to maintain its global standing. 

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

Social Studies -Grade 10 Equivalent

Focus on Globalization in its many forms and how it impacts our community and our country. 

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

Social Studies -Grade 11 Equivalent

Focus on Nationalisms and how it has shaped the 19th and 20th centuries. 

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

Social Studies -Grade 12 Equivalent

Focus on Ideologies and how they influence countries, regions, and alignment of world politics. 

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

US History - Pre-Civil War

This course provides an overview of the emergence of the 13 colonies of New England into one nation that fought a major war for its independence. Students will learn about how this new country began the process of nation building, which led to a major conflict around slavery and regional differences, resulting in a civil war less than 90 years after independence. This course provides students with an excellent overview of some of the key early American innovations.

US History - Post-Civil War

This course traces the key events following the US civil war that led to a burgeoning economy, a strong military, and a stable political system. Students will learn that following a painful rebuilding process in the aftermath of the civil war, the US continues to expand its territory, push the Indians off their lands, ignore the former slaves, deal with a major recession in the 1880's, followed by successes in trade, WW1, the Great Depression, and culminating in WW2. A particular focus is placed on how the US was able to become a global superpower in less than 100 years and maintain its position of power.

English Literature - Ancient Worlds

This course focuses on 2 select classical literatures chosen from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, and Babylon. Exploring ancient cultures and societies, while highlighting relevant, modern themes, this course explores timeless questions for individuals and communities on how we choose in the face of challenging circumstances.

This 12-week course meets for 1 hr. per week online.

Effective Writing - Level I

This introductory course teaches students simple, clear, and proven strategies to write complete and effective paragraphs and short essays. Students learn to develop a plan, and create an outline for their writing assignments, with a focus on content and organization. Course includes all materials, assignments, grading, and feedback to students and parents. 

This online course can be taken in either option: once per week for 12 weeks (1 hr. sessions) or twice per week for 6 weeks (1 hr. sessions).

Effective Writing - Level II

This course teaches students simple, clear, and proven strategies to write more effective and advanced essays. Students will strengthen their writing abilities with a focus on content, organization, mechanics, and students will learn to identify, analyze and assess literary works at the high school level. Course includes all materials, assignments, grading, and feedback to students and parents. 

This online course taken in either option: once per week for 12 weeks (1 hr. sessions) or twice per week for 6 weeks (1 hr. sessions).
